Easy Biology Question (for someone creative), Design a lab to test various volumes of caffeine …?
The Question is :
Design a lab experiment with which yopu can test how various volumes of caffeine (coffee) affect kidney functions.
* The experiment must include a question about caffeines use and kidney functions, a description of the experimental design (aka procedure), and a blank data table with appropriate headings.
My thoughts were:
Question: What effect does caffeine (coffee) have on the way kidney’s function?
Experimental Design: One individual (who loves coffee) will drink 12 cups of black coffee in one day between the hours of 6 am to noon. Another individual will be drinking 12 cups of decaf black coffee in the same time period. Blood tests will be administered to test the effect of the caffeine on their kidney’s that evening.
Data Table: Going across the table (horizontally) Cups of Reg. Coffee per Day / Affect on Kidney / Cups of Decaf Coffee per Day / Affect on Kidney. Then going down the table (vertically) i’d have the numbers 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 , and 12.
Why blood tests? Wouldn’t a urine test of electrolytes and specific gravity be better indicator of renal function ( I mean it’s just coffee, not renal failure!) You could also test for BUN, creatinine and such, but caffeine probably wouldn’t make a big difference in those and they cost a fortune to test. Also many factors could possibly skew a one-time urine test, so you’d probably have to collect a 24hr urine sample (have the test subjects pee into a bottle for 24hrs, mix and test)
Caffeine is metabolised mostly into theophyilline and theobromine, which works as a diuretic by messing with your cAMP signal transduction.
