Steve Wynn continues his winning streak on Static Transmission. Ever since he rescued his lackluster solo career with the incendiary Melting in the Dark in 1996, his albums have been tough, smart, funny, and above full of living, fire-breathing soul. Static Transmission is 50 minutes of lean and nasty rock & roll with loud guitars, gritty lyrics, and a bleeding heart. The guitars howl and Wynn growls his noir lyrics like someone who knows what he is talking about. It is a strong record from beginning to end but some of the songs rank among Wynn’s best to date: “Candy Machine”‘s atonal live wire guitars are reminiscent of Dream Syndicate, and his words are biting and funny; “A Fond Farewell” is a loping, jagged ballad with an evil-sounding vocal and some lovely bells; and “California Style” is a classic single with a killer chorus and sterling guitar work. Some of the songs are just darn good: “Amphetamine” with its breakneck tempo and dueling guitars; “The Ambassadors of Soul” with a slinky electric piano and Wynn’s most heartfelt vocal; “Keep It Clean” is a storming song full of dynamic shifts, slashing guitars, and a wicked Wynn lyric and vocal. No Wynn record is complete without an extremely catchy tune with Wynn reeling off lyrical gems one after the other. His best so far was “500 Girl Mornings” from My Midnight, but the uncredited album closer here gives that song a run for its money; a Dylanesque, ramshackle acoustic singalong with goofy couplets like “a dead ringer for Veronica Lake/jumped right out of my birthday cake.” This is a great album by a rock & roll survivor. You may have forgotten him or written him off or maybe never even heard of him. If that’s the case, you need to give him a chance. No contemporaries make classic rock records like Wynn; he’s what bands like the Wallflowers wish they could be. [As a bonus the disc comes with an extra disc of songs recorded at the same time as Static Transmission and left off the record. The seven originals and "State Trooper," a Springsteen cover, are all solid songs, each good enough to have been on the record proper.] ~ Tim Sendra, Rovi Performers: Craig Schumacher – Harmonica, Vocals (Background); Nick Luca – Vocals (Background); Chris Cacavas – Vocals (Background), Keyboards, Guitar (Acoustic), Guitar (Electric); Dave DeCastro – Vocals (Background), Guitar (Baritone), Bass, Guitar (Acoustic); Jason Victor – Lap Steel Guitar, Vocals (Background), Guitar (Electric), Guitar (Acoustic), Guitar (Baritone); Linda Pitmon -

Sugarcult’s debut disc is a quasi sugar-coated power pop album with punk overtones and a healthy dose of self-effacing humor. Escapism, skepticism, and a devil-may-care view of the world around them are the primary themes that weave their way into the lyrics on this high-energy stripped-to-the-bone collection by this frisky So-Cal quartet. As evidenced in the fiery anthem “Stuck in America,” vocalist Tom Pagontta joyfully proclaims “everyone’s talkin’ ’bout blowing up the neighborhood/all I ever wanted to do was get away.” “Saying Good-bye” is a pathos-filled paean of teenage heartbreak with an explosive chord progression so familiar that documenting it would seem like an accusation of plagiarism, which, in rock & roll of this nature, is an exercise in futility. “Bouncing Off the Walls” is yet another joust at the perils of romance, only this time the protagonist dips into his parent’s cocaine stash to relieve the pain. On Start Static, Sugarcult has mastered the don’t-bore-us-get-to-the-chorus approach to near perfection. ~ Tom Semioli, Rovi Performers: Airin – Vocals; Ben Davis – Vocals; Marko 72 – Guitar; Tim Pagnotta – Guitar, Vocals

The Loving Sounds of Static

The Loving Sounds of Static

The Mobius Band’s full-length Ghostly International debut, The Loving Sounds of Static, mines similar territory as their City vs. Country EP, although the album is less spacy and more rooted in guitar pop. As with the EP, the band worked with engineer Peter Katis, whose clients also include Interpol; The Loving Sounds of Static has more than a little of that band’s sound — especially in the rounded basslines and crisp drum hits — although the Mobius Band’s approach is much lighter and less dramatic. Their arrangements, which seamlessly integrate electronica into their indie rock (or possibly, vice versa), are also a lot more inventive. In fact, the Mobius Band may be best appreciated for how ably they can switch from live drums to tinny drum machines, or from guitars to glitchy synths, within their songs. Occasionally, The Loving Sound of Static’s masterful production and arrangements tend to overshadow the actual songs, particularly on longer, less obviously melodic tracks like “Philadelphia” and “Doo Wop.” On the other hand, when the band tries to rock out on “You’re Wrong,” it fights against their attention to detail and rather delicate vocals. The Mobius Band does better when they play to their strengths as a witty but heartfelt pop band, whether it’s on the wry groove of the title track or the soaring choruses of “Radio Coup,” which borrows a bit of the easygoing flair of mid-’90s indie rock. The band may be at its best when its sweetly sad and self-deprecating. The winsome “Twilight” and “Close the Door” mix cheap and cheerful sounds with earnest feelings, much like a less-twee Postal Service; lyrics like “I Just Turned 18″‘s “Don’t make no decisions/Mope around the house/Making new incisions” reveal a real heart beating underneath the album’s electronic pulses. The worst that can be said about The Loving Sounds of Static is that it never sounds anything less than pretty: it’s a solid debut album and definitely worth a listen for fans of the Postal Service or the French Kicks’ later work. ~ Heather Phares, Rovi
