William Penn is often credited with introducing coffee in 1682 to the Quaker colony he founded on the banks of the Delaware River, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Stamp Act of 1765 and the Tea Tax of 1767 were catalysts in joining Americans in a general tea boycott. Drinking coffee became an act of patriotism back in the days of the Boston Tea Party when Americans protested the excessive tax imposed upon by King George III on their tea.
Coffee, then, became the “national drink” and helped promote the spirit of our nation:
- Coffee houses became gathering places for patriots, Sons of Liberty, luminaries and anyone else of political or oratory distinction.
- Paul Revere, John Adams, George Washington and many others frequented these establishments for political and social purposes.
- As the Revolution was drawing near, many colonials, some in Quaker attire, would congregate in coffee shops to argue against British oppression.
- After the Revolution, coffee houses became important social and political establishments in the 18Th century.
- They were in fact a mercantile exchange, often located near the docks and the seaports.
- The coffee shop, as it was also called, was the place to negotiate deals, attend auctions, discuss politics, grab a meal, toast to friends and special events, read newspapers or listen to impromptu speeches from people who became part of American history.
- Colonial America coffee houses became such active political centers that even before the Stamp Act protests, English conservatives referred to them as “seminaries of sedition.”
The Declaration of Independence had its first public reading outside the Merchant’s Coffee House in Philadelphia which was built by the social and mercantile aristocracy of the time. This famous establishment later on became known as the City Tavern. The Tavern became the hub of the business community activity for more than 50 years and gained a reputation for the “…most genteel tavern in the country…” where members of the First Continental Congress met regularly.
One of the first coffee shops in Virginia, Charlton’s Coffee House, was the scene in 1765 of an angry confrontation between colonists and the British-appointed governor of the Virginia colony. Today, Colonial Williamsburg features an authentic recreation of Charlton’s coffee shop on the same site. If you are in this beautiful colonial town, be sure to sit in 18Th century style and enjoy a cup of coffee, chocolate or tea – – preferably, a good cup of coffee! Who knows? You could be sitting on the same spot where Thomas Jefferson and George Washington drank coffee… What did they talk about? Nobody knows for sure but you can try to guess based on historical records.
